Whakaaro | Reflections : Joslyn Faataui

Our Whakaaro | Reflections series share the thoughts and reflections of rangatahi, clients, and team members who co-create with Activate as we strive to build ethical changemaking into all facets of our work - from framing and messaging, to the production teams involved, to employing stakeholders and community members and more.

This reflection is brought to you by Joslyn Faataui, a talented young person from the villages of Gataivai and Salelologa in Savai’i who portrayed Candice’s encouraging and reliable best friend in our most recent rangatahi elections video, made in collaboration with Auckland Council.

I walked into the video shoot nervous because I haven’t acted in years, only to find myself regaining my confidence after our ‘whakawhanaungatanga’ session, where we introduced ourselves and got to know each other, after that it felt like I had known the cast and crew for a very long time.

Throughout filming we had continuous fun, and laughter, and we had support from the beginning right to the end!

Firstly, Whitney, Kera, Benji, and Jason made sure our puku (bellies) were happy and full of kai (food), and what topped it all off was Whitney’s Chai tea that we sipped throughout the day (and even on screen!).

I want to thank the cast and crew for making me feel really comfortable and welcomed.

I felt so privileged to have played a part in such an awesome kaupapa.

I feel that if tikanga hadn’t taken place like our whakawhanaungatanga session and the manaakitanga from the crew, it would have felt totally different and confined. Instead I felt really good at the end of shooting, and I was excited to go home to tell everyone about my experience working with the Activate whānau.

Fa’afetai tele lava,
Joslyn Faataui
